Biotin and hair growth — what a London trichologist actually thinks

Biotin helps hair only if you're deficient — and almost no one is. Here is the trichologist's honest take.

In short

  • True biotin deficiency is rare — supplementation rarely helps.
  • High-dose biotin interferes with thyroid and cardiac lab tests.
  • If supplementing: 30–100 mcg/day is enough, not 5,000 mcg.
  • Stop 3 days before any blood test.

Biotin is the most-hyped hair supplement and the least-useful one for the average person. Here is when it actually helps, when it doesn't, and one important safety point about lab tests.

When biotin actually helps

True biotin deficiency — from long-term isotretinoin, some anti-seizure medications, alcohol dependence, or biotinidase deficiency. In these cases, correction is dramatic. In everyone else, supplementation shows no benefit above placebo.

The dose problem

Common OTC biotin supplements contain 5,000–10,000 mcg — 150–300× the daily requirement. Excess is excreted, but massive doses interfere with immunoassay-based lab tests: thyroid function (falsely suggests hyperthyroidism), troponin (missing heart attacks), reproductive hormones. Multiple case reports of misdiagnosis.

What to do instead

Eat eggs, nuts, salmon — biotin-rich foods cover requirements easily. If truly supplementing, cap at 100 mcg/day and stop before any blood test.

Biotin doesn't grow hair. It grows lab-test errors.

Frequently asked

Common questions

Are 'hair, skin, nails' vitamins worthwhile?+

Usually not — biotin-heavy, otherwise generic multivitamin. Money better spent on ferritin correction.

Can biotin cause acne?+

Anecdotally yes at high doses — displaces vitamin B5 which regulates sebum.

Should I tell my GP I'm taking it?+

Yes — always, especially before any blood test.
