The early signs of hair loss in London — and the science-backed next move

Hair loss rarely announces itself. Here is how London trichologists separate normal shedding from the early signs that actually need action.

In short

  • Losing 50–100 hairs daily is normal; persistent loss for 3+ months is not.
  • Diameter changes — finer, lighter, shorter hairs — matter more than count.
  • A widening parting, receding temples and a 'lighter' ponytail are the three actionable signals.
  • In London, a £120 trichology consult is almost always the right first step before any treatment.

Hair loss rarely announces itself. It creeps in through a wider parting, a slower ponytail wrap, or a shower drain that gets uncomfortably full. Most Londoners wait two to four years before doing anything — and most of those years are recoverable.

This guide, reviewed by registered trichologists practising on Harley Street and in East London, walks you through what to look for, when it matters, and how to choose between a clinic, a salon and an at-home protocol.

Shedding vs thinning: the distinction that matters

Losing 50–100 hairs a day is normal. Shedding becomes meaningful when it persists for more than three months, or when you notice the diameter of individual hairs changing — finer, lighter, shorter. This is called miniaturisation, and it is the earliest reliable signal of androgenetic alopecia.

In a London clinic, miniaturisation is measured with trichoscopy — a dermatoscope camera that magnifies the scalp 20–70x. If more than 20% of follicles in the affected area are miniaturised, the diagnosis is usually clear.

Three early signs worth acting on

If any one of these has been true for more than three months, book a consult. If two are true, book this week.

  • A parting that has visibly widened over six months — compare side-by-side photos under the same light.
  • A receding temple line, even subtle — particularly common in men aged 22–35 and post-menopausal women.
  • Hair that feels different in your hand — softer, weaker, less dense at the roots. Most people notice this while tying a ponytail or running fingers through after shampoo.

Telogen effluvium vs androgenetic alopecia

Sudden, diffuse shedding 2–3 months after a stressful event (illness, childbirth, severe diet, COVID, surgery) is almost always telogen effluvium — temporary and self-resolving in 6–9 months. It does not need finasteride or minoxidil; it needs nutrition, sleep and patience.

Slow, patterned thinning at the temples, crown or parting is almost always androgenetic alopecia. Time is the enemy here — the earlier you intervene, the more density you preserve.

When to book a London clinic

Book a consultation if you have any of: visible scalp through hair when dry; a clearly receding hairline; hair that has changed texture in under 12 months; or a family history of hair loss combined with any new shedding.

Expect to pay £80–£180 for a trichology consultation in London. PRP courses range £600–£1,800. FUE hair transplants in vetted London clinics range £4,500–£12,000 depending on graft count.

Frequently asked

Common questions

How much hair loss per day is normal in adults?+

Between 50 and 100 hairs per day is within the normal range. Counts above this for longer than 3 months warrant a trichology consultation.

Can early hair loss be reversed?+

Hair that is miniaturising (still producing, but thinner) can often be thickened with minoxidil, finasteride or PRP. Hair that has stopped producing entirely (scarred follicles) cannot be regrown without transplantation.

What is the best first step in London?+

A trichoscopy consultation with a registered trichologist (£80–£180). This gives you a measurable baseline and a treatment plan before you spend on products or procedures.
