London hard water and your hair: does a shower filter actually help?

London water is hard enough to be a routine problem. A £120 filter isn't a miracle — but it's more useful than most £120 hair products.

In short

  • London water is 250–350 mg/L calcium carbonate — very hard by European standards.
  • Calcium and magnesium deposit on hair shafts, causing dullness, tangling and colour fade.
  • Vitamin C or KDF shower filters remove chlorine and reduce some minerals; typical cost £80–£180.
  • Chelating shampoo weekly removes accumulated minerals — cheaper than a filter and often as effective.

London tap water is among the hardest in the UK — south London and central hardest of all. Over months, calcium and magnesium accumulate on the hair shaft, creating dullness, tangling, and colour fade. This is a real problem, not a myth.

What a shower filter actually does

Most shower filters use vitamin C or KDF (a copper-zinc alloy) to remove chlorine. Chlorine removal is genuinely useful — it's the harshest thing in London tap water. Actual mineral removal is more modest; no shower filter fully softens water.

The alternative — chelating shampoo

A chelating shampoo (Malibu C Hard Water Wellness, K18 Peptide Prep) binds and removes accumulated minerals in a weekly wash. Cheaper than a filter and often as effective for hair specifically.

The London routine

Best combined: a shower filter for chlorine and daily benefit, plus a chelating shampoo once weekly to reset mineral build-up. Colour-treated hair benefits most; virgin hair benefits least.

London's water is not going to soften. Your routine can.

Frequently asked

Common questions

Which London postcodes have the hardest water?+

Central and south London are hardest (250–350 mg/L). East and north-east London are somewhat softer.

Does a whole-house softener help hair?+

Yes, significantly — but the cost (£800–£2,500) rarely justifies for hair alone.

How often should I use chelating shampoo?+

Once weekly for most; monthly if hair feels fine with regular products.
