Split ends: London stylist truth and what actually helps

There is exactly one thing that fixes a split end. Everything else just delays the inevitable.

In short

  • Split ends cannot be permanently repaired — only cut off.
  • Sealing products (silicones, polymers) mask split ends temporarily.
  • The average Londoner needs a dust (0.5–1cm) every 8–10 weeks to prevent splits climbing the shaft.
  • Once a split has climbed 2cm+, the entire length needs a graduated cut.

Nothing permanently repairs a split end. Products that claim to 'seal' or 'mend' them work for a wash cycle then let go. The only real fix is scissors — and used regularly, scissors are cheap.

Why splits happen

The cuticle scales at the tip get lifted by daily friction — brushing, towel drying, sleeping on cotton, heat styling. Once lifted, the two halves of the cortex separate and travel up the shaft.

Prevention that actually works

  • Silk or satin pillowcase (£25–£60 pays for itself in months).
  • Microfibre or old T-shirt drying, not cotton towels.
  • Detangle from ends up, wet-brush or wide-tooth comb only.
  • Regular 'dusts' at the salon (0.5–1cm off, £15–£30) every 8–10 weeks.
  • Air dry to 80% before heat styling.

What sealing products actually do

Silicone-based serums glue the cuticle down temporarily, giving a smoother look and feel. They wash out in 1–3 shampoos. Fine to use for polish, useless as a permanent fix.

The cheapest hair repair on earth is a pair of hairdressing scissors used every ten weeks.

Frequently asked

Common questions

Do split-end serums really seal splits?+

Cosmetically yes, structurally no. The split reopens after washing.

Can I trim my own split ends?+

Only if you're skilled and cut individual splits with sharp shears. Otherwise a salon dust is £15–£30 and safer.

Are split ends caused by shampoo?+

Very rarely. Almost always it's mechanical friction and heat.
